EDDM vs Targeted Direct Mail: When to Saturate and When to Pick
EDDM is the cheapest way to blanket a neighborhood. Targeted mail puts you in the right hands. Here's the 2026 math, response-rate evidence, and the exact campaigns each one wins.

The 30-second answer
Pick EDDM when your offer works for almost everyone in a neighborhood (restaurants, dentists, real estate, home services) and the priority is the lowest possible cost per piece. Pick targeted mail when the audience is a slice of households (HHI > $150k, parents of kids 5–12, recent movers, registered Republicans) and a higher per-piece cost is justified by a higher response rate.
Cost per piece, 2026
- EDDM Retail postcard: $0.260 postage + ~$0.18 print = ~$0.44/piece all-in
- Targeted First-Class automation postcard (5-digit): $0.453 postage + $0.18 print + $0.065 list = ~$0.70/piece all-in
- Targeted First-Class stamped postcard: $0.65 postage + $0.18 print + $0.065 list = ~$0.90/piece all-in
EDDM looks ~35% cheaper per piece. But cost per response is the number that matters, and that's where targeting pays back. (Postage verified against USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026.)
Response rate reality check
DMA's 2025 benchmark report puts cold-list response at 1.0% and well-targeted lists at 4.4%. EDDM lands between the two — typically 0.5%–1.5% depending on the offer fit. That means a $0.44 EDDM piece costs $29–$88 per response, while a $0.70 targeted piece at 3% costs $23 per response. Targeting wins the per-response math whenever your audience is narrower than "everyone on the block".
The three EDDM wins
- Hyper-local services — Pizza, dry cleaners, dental, urgent care, garage door repair. Anyone whose customer lives within 3 miles.
- Grand openings & relocations — You need awareness from everyone, fast, and don't have purchase history to target on.
- Political door-to-door routes — When you're saturating precincts a campaign team is already canvassing.
The five targeted-mail wins
- High AOV products — Solar, kitchen remodel, luxury auto. A 3× cost-per-piece is fine when a single conversion is worth $5k+.
- B2B — There is no EDDM equivalent for "facility managers at California manufacturers with 50–200 employees".
- Nonprofit appeals — Past donors respond 5–9× better than cold; the list cost is dwarfed by the lift.
- Reactivation — Mailing your own lapsed customers consistently pulls 5%+. EDDM would waste 99% of that buy.
- Political persuasion — Voter file selects (party, propensity, district) are essential to message correctly.
Workflow + production
EDDM lets you skip a permit and skip a list entirely — pick routes on the USPS BCG portal, drop bundles at the destination Post Office, done. We handle that bundling, paperwork, and drop for our EDDM customers. Targeted mail needs presort to qualify for Marketing Mail rates, IMb tracking for in-home date accuracy, and NCOA processing within 90 days of drop. Both run on the same press; the difference is upstream (list + permit) and downstream (drop strategy).
How to pick in 60 seconds
If your customer profile fits more than 60% of a ZIP code, run EDDM. If it's narrower than that, the targeted list will pay back its premium. Try both on the same offer with our EDDM cost calculator and our mailing list estimator, then send us the winner.
